My Liquid shelf system was presented at Salone del Mobile in Milan, in spring 2003.
It was the world’s first organic, cnc-milled, non-orthogonal shelve system.

Many designers have copied this simple idea themselves since.  But they missed an important detail. 

Liquid remains, to our best knowledge, the only available system that uses non-orthogonal angles for the vertical pieces. These follow the shape of the curves which gives the shape more definition.  Curves can even be seen when standing right in front of the shelve.

In 2003 CAD & design software was limited when it came to true organic modeling.
Liquid was conceived in one week – from idea to the first prototype which was exhibited at Salone de Mobile.

I used Wings3D to model the shape, exported the control cage to Autodesk Maya where I converted it into subdivision surfaces and those to NURBS patches. The NURBS geometry was exported to Rhinoceros where I did the slicing to obtain the final curves for the CNC.

Today new tools like Fusion360 make the road to obtaining CAM data for such shapes much less bumpy.
